Dyson, known for its home appliances, has introduced OnTrac headphones. The brand abandoned the experimental air purifier from the first model, making a standard headset. The novelty competes with such premium wireless solutions as AirPods Max.
Appearance and battery
The MKBHD reviewer called the headphones the heaviest of all that he tested (451 grams). After all, almost all of their parts are made of metal. However, in practice, the discomfort is not so pronounced, since the weight was correctly distributed. The batteries are installed in the side bases of the headband. Due to this, wearing OnTrac is not too tiring in static scenarios such as listening to music on the couch. The shutdown button, unlike Apple’s flagship, is provided here.
The ear pads and external panels on the earcups were made replaceable. They are easy to replace, which is useful for customization or updating in case of wear. The manufacturer offers various colors of components: blue, orange, black, green and their combinations. The coating can be metallic or matte. All options are sold separately on the company’s website. There is also a good round carrying case.
Control is carried out by a button combined with a joystick. It slides in all four directions, which allows you to adjust the volume and switch tracks. Such a solution is not difficult to find with a blind hand. But switching between ANC and transparency mode was implemented unsuccessfully. To do this, you need a double tap on the left bowl, but it works every other time. This is because the gesture is recognized without a sensor and requires additional effort when pressed.
The main trump card of the headphones is autonomy. Dyson claims 55 hours with ANC on, which could be enough for more than a week of use. This figure is twice as high as the results of many analogues on the market.
Sound and noise cancellation
OnTrac is powered by 40 mm drivers operating from 6 Hz to 21 kHz. Engadget noted that in general, the sound is good and detailed. But it lacks the depth that competitors in the same class offer. AirPods Max turned out to be somewhat better in most genres. There is not much free space inside the ear pads, they fit snugly. Because of this, the stereo picture is not so wide, and the separation of the instruments is slightly lacking. There are three EQ presets available in the Dyson app: Neutral, Bass Boost and Enhanced. For music, journalists recommend the latter.
The utility also displays a graph showing the noise level outside and inside the headphones in real time. Pairing with multiple gadgets at the same time is supported. The noise reduction was also average. Eight microphones adequately cut out static noise. But Bose and Sony’s ANC systems are much stronger.
